HPV: The Health Risk for All Genders
HPV or Human Papilloma Virus, can be transmitted through close contact, sexual activity, or aggressive contact in the genital area. Many people may not be aware that both women and men are at risk of infecting HPV, and the virus can hide in the body for more than 10 years without any symptoms before causing diseases in the future. Infection with HPV is a leading cause of the following cancers:
For Women:
- Mouth and oropharyngeal cancer: Arises from abnormalities in the tissues inside the oral and throat areas, including the tonsils, base of the tongue, soft palate, and more. It is a severe and dangerous cancer if detected in its advanced stage.
- Cervical Cancer: It is the most common cancer in Thai women, often starts without noticeable symptom in the early stage, leading to delayed diagnosis. Symptoms may include abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, abdominal pain, abnormal urination, etc.
- Rectal Cancer: This occurs when cancer cells develop in the anal region, causing pain, itching, and rectal bleeding. In the early stage, symptoms may be absent or similar to hemorrhoids, leading to a late diagnosis.
- Vaginal Cancer: Often results in abnormal bleeding from the vagina during menstruation, post-menopausal bleeding or after sexual intercourse.
- Genital Wart: Fleshy, wart-like growths that appear in the genital or anal area. It can cause pain, itching, and are aesthetically displeasing.
For Men:
- Mouth and Oropharyngeal Cancer: Similar to women, men are at risk of developing abnormalities in mouth and oropharynx due to HPV.
- Penile Cancer: Especially in elderly men, it can result in abnormalities in the male genital organs, such as the presence of malignant cells forming a lump (tumor) that can appear anywhere on your penis, chronic sores, inflammation, pain, or bleeding from the penis.
